7 easy dairy-free sorbet and ice cream ideas to make for hot summer days

Heatwaves can be glorious.

The forest here in the Welsh borders is lush and green for a reason so it is rarely what I would class as ‘hot’.

But today it is hot. Not in the 1976 heatwave sense but it is warm enough to enjoy a frozen treat instead of lunch.

The surrounding forest canopy provides a cool respite on hot days like this. The brook that borders our cottage is a refreshing blessing as the dragonflies hover over the little eddies babbling over the riverbed stones. I may add that this is one of the few times that living so close to the brook feels like a blessing.

Every year when people remark on the heat of summer, I am generally taken aback as I emerge from the cool depths of our cottage like a startled badger, blinking in the bright light of the warm summer sun.

Heatwaves can be energy sapping.

Depending on the level of effort you want to exercise for sorbet and ice cream making, here are seven refreshing raw sorbet and ice cream ideas. A couple for when you only have enough energy to open the freezer or ice box door. If you can get the food processor out there are more options. If you feel like blowing the dust off the ice cream maker for a full-blown ice cream, then you have many frozen assets of which to avail yourself.

These are raw, gluten-free and dairy free too.

Just the thing for enjoying whilst languishing in the sun on lazy summer days.

A bunch of frozen grapes

FROZEN GRAPES

You can manage this, even if you only have an ice box.

Three frozen mandarins on a black plate

MINI FROZEN MANDARIN SORBETS

An absolute breeze to make, not really a recipe but more of an idea.

frozen bananas on sticks dipped in chocolate covered in raspberry pieces

super quick BANANA CHOC ICE

If banana ice cream is king of the ice box, then the banana choc ice is surely queen.

3 pineapple ice pops on sticks

Piña Colada IcePop

A refreshing summertime treat.

2 scoops of mango sorbet

MaNGO SORBET

A reviving summer sorbet that is embarassingly easy, and less effort than opening a tub and waiting for it to thaw enough to dig your spoon in.

Two scoops of banana tahini ice cream in a black bowl

Banana Tahini Choc Chip ‘Ice’ Cream

Tahini gives a Middle Eastern twist to a simple raw banana-based ice cream. Overwhip this and it will be so runny that you’ll have to eat it hanging over the sink - or drink it.

Scoop of avocado mint choc chip ice cream

Avocado Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream

A little more effort but oh-so-worth it
